A relatively healthy and smooth campaign of fall athletics left many members of the LMSD community hopeful of a potential winter sports season. But a November 16 school board vote rejected the proposed Health and Safety Plan by a 5-4 vote, leaving the season in jeopardy. The plan was formulated by the district’s Health and Safety Committee along with LM’s Athletics Director Jason Stroup and Harriton’s Athletics Director Thomas Ferguson. Included were guidelines for mask-wearing throughout practices and competition, modifications to practice locations and participation numbers, limits on spectators, and locker room usage to maintain distancing. Winter sports are not out of the question, but the recent vote against the proposed plan renders student-athletes considerably less optimistic about the prospect of winter training and interscholastic competition amidst the pandemic. More on this topic in the next issue of The Merionite.
