LM’s boys’ basketball team has had yet another historic season. Headed by Coach Gregg Downer, the team has had immense successes throughout his 35-year coaching career at LM. The Aces displayed incredible commitment and teamwork this season to achieve the greatest of results. The team went on an incredible winning streak, with Downer celebrating his 700th win as head of the program as well as earning another championship title.
Throughout the season, the Aces showcased their remarkable skill and teamwork. Their season started off with three losses in five games, but the Aces came back, winning seventeen of their next eighteen games. They also had to face setbacks from a harrowing ACL injury that starter Tate Perkins ’25 sustained. Their journey to the title highlighted their resilience and dedication to excellence. The Aces came together in the face of challenges, showcasing the true definition of teamwork and determination. The team’s strategic gameplay and unity were clear as they progressed throughout the tournament, ultimately winning the Central League (CAL) Championship. They defeated Penncrest 63-55 in the championship final, the same team they lost to during their nearly 18-game win streak.
The Aces have delivered multiple impressive performances this season. Key victories include a 91-45 win against Ridley on January 30, a 70-63 victory over Conestoga on January 28, and a commanding 77-43 win over Radnor on January 14. These wins were marked by impressive individual performances and a united emphasis on defense, allowing them to finish games convincingly.
Beyond the results, Coach Downer has also achieved significant milestones this season. On December 20, Downer reached a significant milestone by securing his 700th career victory with a decisive 67-39 win against the Haverford Fords. This accomplishment highlights his lasting influence on the program and the wider basketball community. It also highlights his reputation as one of the most successful coaches in the history of Pennsylvania basketball, admired for his talent in player development and his steadfast commitment to the game.
