Earth Day is a special day to celebrate our planet. In the past, the LM community has done numerous acts of service as a way to show appreciation, including participating in the Annual Stormwater Runoff 5K Train Run, NarbEarth Day, and the LM Conservancy’s Earth Day. When LM’s BuildOn sponsor Thomas Reed was asked how the organization would be involved on Earth Day, he stated, “we help put up stands at NarbEarth Day and many other parks.”

With all that said, COVID-19 has changed this year’s Earth Day plans. Although it may not be as easy to gather together and help, we can individually partake in this wonderful day! Here are a few ways to lend a hand:

  1. Recycle: It sounds simple because it is! By throwing away used water bottles and cans in a recycling bin, less pollution is made and the oceans will be cleaner for sea life. Recycling is a great way to decrease the build up of waste, making it quick, effortless, and beneficial for the Earth!
  2. Walk: April is finally here and that means summer is just around the corner. By walking instead of driving, not only do you get some Vitamin D, but you also lower greenhouse gas emissions. Not driving helps both our environment and our wellbeing.
  3. Plant a tree: Did you know that a tree can absorb ten pounds of air pollutants per year? Not only that, but they can also produce 260 pounds of oxygen! Trees are clearly very beneficial to the Earth and this is a quick and fun activity to do with family members or just by yourself!
  4. Educate: Not allowed to go out? No worries! By becoming educated on why Earth Day is important and sharing that knowledge with friends and family, our Earth will be greater in no time. Five minutes can create a significant difference for our environment.

It is the little things that matter the most. These four acts of service do not take much effort or time, but if each person contributed it would help the world immensely. It is our job to protect and maintain a good environment. Do not underestimate what one bottle can do, what one mile can do, what one tree can do, what one message can do, and definitely do not underestimate what we, the LM community, can do this Earth Day.
