On May 5, 1862 the Mexican Army fought the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla and ultimately won. Cinco de Mayo is annually observed on that day as a way to celebrate the victory and Mexican heritage. Although COVID-19 has put a stop to many activities, Cinco de Mayo can still be celebrated in multiple ways. Below is a list of COVID-19-safe activities to enjoy with close friends and family.

Make Food: In Mexican culture, food is more than a satisfaction to the taste buds; it is a symbol of love and pride. Making dishes like salsa, tacos, enchiladas, Mexican red rice, mole poblano, and more, can not only be delicious, but fun for family members to cook together.

Decorate: What is a celebration without decorations? Decorations can be bought from the store or homemade. Gathering friends and family members to decorate creates quality bonding time and makes the room festive. Grab some paper, scissors, and color pencils because Cinco de Mayo is right around the corner!

Turn Up The Music: Music is significant to the Mexican culture as it vocalizes love, passion, history, legend, and oppression. When any celebration is happening, whether it is big or small, music shall be played. Mariachi bands and the melodies they make create joy and laughter at all celebrations!

Dress Up: Mexican culture is vibrant, loud, and lively! On Cinco de Mayo, color is everywhere, more specifically the colors of the Mexican flag (red, white, and green). Most people tend to wear long, flowing dresses or traditional Mexican pant suits with bright sombreros. A nice suit and heels are not needed, instead wear the most colorful clothing!

Play Games: Nothing says “fun” like a little competition! On Cinco de Mayo, many games are played with family members and friends. A traditional one would be, “Mexican Hat Dance Relay.” The game begins with two opposing groups. One person from each group will run to the sombrero, do a silly dance around it and run back. The first team to finish the relay wins! Playing games such as this one is a great way to pass time and celebrate Cinco de Mayo.

These five activities are essential to a fantastic celebration, but also COVID-19 friendly. Cinco de Mayo is a special and significant day for people around the world and should be celebrated with love and pride. The day begins with happiness and should end in happiness. With these five activities, Cinco de Mayo will be memorable!
