On January 22, the Academy announced the Oscar nominees for this year’s ceremony. There were many unexpected nominations, including F1 earning a bid for Best Picture, Paul Mescal being notably snubbed, and Elle Fanning receiving her nomination. Below I will cover all the nominations and predict who will win each award.
For Best Picture, I think that three movies are seriously in the running: Sinners, Hamnet, and One Battle After Another. Although Sinners broke the impressive record of Oscar nominations, I predict that they will lose Best Picture to One Battle After Another. Another award that seems to be going the same way is Best Director, in which it seems that Coogler, Zhao, and Anderson will be the frontrunners and similarly, Anderson will most likely win this award as well.
As for the acting awards, the race for Best Actor is mainly between Timothée Chalamet and Wagner Moura. I have not yet seen The Secret Agent, so I can not fully comment on who will win, but I think Timothée Chalamet is likely to win his first Oscar. I personally believed Ethan Hawke’s performance in Blue Moon to be better, but it would not be unreasonable for Chalamet to take home the award. As for Best Actress, I think that Jessie Buckley and her incredible performance in Hamnet will win her the award. For Best Supporting Actor, while I think all the candidates were absolutely incredible, Stellan Skarsgard and his heartbreaking performance in Sentimental Value will land him the win, in my opinion. Finally, for Supporting Actress, I am very stuck between Amy Madigan in Weapons and Teyana Taylor in One Battle After Another. I’m personally going to choose Madigan, but I believe Taylor deserves it just as much.
For screenplay, I think that we’ll see One Battle After Another win for Adapted Screenplay and Sinners win for Original Screenplay. Sinners will also probably win two more awards for Best Casting and Best Score, while One Battle After Another will probably win Cinematography and Film Editing. Now, the next three awards—Costume Design, Makeup and Hairstyling, and Production Design—will all be given to Guillermo Del Toro’s Frankenstein. This film, while not many people’s cup of tea, is a visually stunning movie.
For Original Song, they will probably give it to “Golden” from KPOP Demon Hunters, simply because of its success overall, but personally I think “I Lied to You” from Sinners and the eponymous song from Train Dreams were much better. For Sound Design, I think that F1 will win an award for its electric atmosphere that the sound department created. For Visual Effects, I can see F1 winning, but the Oscars love the Avatar movies, so Avatar: Fire and Ash will take home the Oscar.
For Animated Feature, I think that KPOP Demon Hunters will win once again for just how popular it was. For International Feature, I think that Sentimental Value, a movie with so much heart, will win the award. The last award I will predict is Documentary Feature, which will go to The Perfect Neighbor, which is a heartbreaking documentary that you can find on Netflix. The other awards that I am not predicting are the short film awards. I have not seen these movies yet because they usually start showing these in theaters and online in late February and early March.
What my predictions truly say is that One Battle After Another will be the true winner of the night with five awards, followed by Frankenstein and Sinners with three each. Sentimental Value and KPOP Demon Hunters will each get two awards. Finally, Marty Supreme, Hamnet, Weapons, F1, Avatar: Fire and Ash, and The Perfect Neighbor will each receive one award.
