It’s no secret that the Main Line is home to a multitude of Starbucks cafes: drive half a mile, and another will pop up. But among the conspicuous green signs are a number of hidden cafe gems. In our search for the best local cafe, we found our top four:
- Green Engine Coffee: A storefront almost entirely made of windows ensures that Green Engine is bathed in a perpetual glow of natural light. The atmosphere here is airy, mid-century modern, and refreshing. The coffee, made with beans from the local Philadelphia company Rival Bros Coffee, is excellent. There was no hint of acidity or bitterness in the iced vanilla latte we tried. The food at Green Engine, albeit expensive, is worth it. The spinach-artichoke grilled cheese is a crispy, melty, savory delight that even comes with a side of sliced apples. The avocado toast, adorned with pink pickled onions, pepitas, and the ever-hip microgreen, is sure to please with its contrast of hearty sourdough and creamy avocado. If you’re in the mood for high-quality coffee and artisanal snacks, Green Engine is your place. Green Engine Coffee – 16 Haverford Station Rd
- Char and Stave: Char and Stave is a hip, warm-industrial cafe that converts from a cafe by day to a whiskey bar at night. Char and Stave’s refreshments are not the main attraction at this establishment—the Banana Bread Latte tasted mostly of milk, while the Whiskey Smash Latte (non-alcoholic!) had an odd bitter aftertaste. The pastry selection was limited, with only a few beignets left from the morning. In spite of that, the inventiveness of drinks wasn’t lost on us; the Apple Crisp Spiced Chai Latte combined small bits of dried apple with autumnal spices for a delectably flavorful seasonal treat. The reason to head over to Char and Stave is the atmosphere—dim lighting, relaxing indie music (For Emma, Forever Ago made an appearance), and dark wooden furniture create a comforting atmosphere that leaves customers lingering for hours. We were so enamored with the vibe of C&S that we stayed until 7:45 p.m. We only snuck out when open-mic poetry night was set to begin, just one of the many evening events that Char and Stave host on a weekly basis. - La Colombe: Walls of brick, seats of dark wood, and an open wood beam ceiling mark the ecosystem of La Colombe. On busy days, the sound of lounging customers echoes throughout the entire space, but on slow days, the silence is deafening. The Coffeehouse is described as a workshop space, and customers come with notebooks and computers to sip on hand-crafted drinks and pastries. Whether to-go or to-work, La Colombe’s Cold Brew is the best in the area. Sharp and smooth, the Cold Brew provides an intense energy boost and crisp refreshment. The almond croissant provides a perfect pairing; its powdered sugar and chopped almond embellishment and granulated almond paste core make for a sweet—and slightly messy—contrast. - Tous Le Jours: Tous Le Jours is described as a French-Asian bakery chain specializing in detailed pastries. The pumpkin croissant was a classic, flaky pastry with rich pumpkin filling. The honeydew bread was more avant-garde—the fresh melon flavor along with the luscious filling made for a unique but delicious combination. We recommend staying away from the strawberries and cream croissants: although the fresh berries tucked into a pocket of whipped cream may look enticing, the cream is surprisingly heavy and greasy. As for drinks, we ordered the Pumpkin Spice Latte and the Tiramisu Latte. The Pumpkin Spice latte was topped with a thick layer of cold foam, lending even more autumnal complexity to the beverage. Beware, though—the beverages at Tous Le Jours tend to be quite sweet. We also got the world-renowned Tiramisu Latte, a drink that had previously been marked as a World Coffee Innovation Award Finalist in 2024. The latte lives up to its name—it can be described as nothing less than a tiramisu in a cup. Cinnamon covered the top layer, and syrup swirled throughout the drink. Tour Le Jours – 393 W Lancaster Ave
